Natalie Kates is a self-taught outsider artist on the inside track of the fashion industry. Who else would better understand the 21st centurys obsession with youth and beauty as a form of power and currency. Similar to how we over stimulated by reality show, celebrity culture, tabloids and media images, Kates also likes to bombard and overwhelm the viewers senses with her work. As an artist, Kates collages are saturated with overlapping, repetitious and glamorized images that grasp the viewer. Kates collages are theme-oriented images such as eyes, jewelry, lips and vintage blue boy magazines. She mounts them piece-by-piece, layer-by-layer onto canvases or wood. Each art piece can take months to collect, razor cut and complete. In addition to her collages Kates does single cut images Be-Dazzled with glitter as if going to a red carpet premier. She has the ability to inundate the viewer with these desired things. She literally shows an obsession. In doing so, the images become unfamiliar and no longer have the same desire. She dares the viewer to stare into each piece and make sense of the new image that is created by cutouts.
