Fifties fashion stood for glamour and austerity, with the major influence from Christian Dior, Chanel and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Dior created the ‘New Look’ in 1947 which stood for narrow waistlines and wide skirts screaming femininity. Mid fifties, Coco Chanel challenged the New Look through the introduction of the new Chanel suit: simple design featuring a below the knee skirt and a collarless jacket finished with gold braid. Qualms about wearing fur did not exist then, every girl’s dream was a mink fur coat. Towards the latter part of the fifties young women started to look less like their mothers as they wore brightly patterned dresses with tight waists and wide skirts over a stiff starched petticoat, ideal for Rock ‘n’ Roll dancing.
In 2011, Primark lets us time-travel back to the fifties for a shilling or two with their spring and summer collection.
